Our client Ken in Park Ridge, Ilinois had the good sense to know that the house with a modernist sensibility that he had purchased several years ago was worth saving. Ken has put a lot of love into restoring the hidden beauty of the place, piece by piece back to its original glory. It is a work in progress and NDC was brought in to study the rear porch, which fronts onto a small lake. The porch was originally open, but was enclosed when Ken bought it. It wasn't very well done and needed an overhaul Having another enclosed room is easy to get used to, and Ken wanted to save the interior space, so a porch was added as an an extension of the existing enclosed porch in order to stay clear of the interior sight lines to the lake. The architecture of the existing house was respected and enhanced while adding necessary handrails, replacement windows and doors. Steel channels that act as cladding at the horizontal floor and ceiling plain extend out to become the structural support for the new exterior porch. Small projects can make a big impact for stewards of architecture like Ken. We love clients like him!
